Mental Prison

Locked up tight in a prison of the mind,
In a dark corner, where no escape can we find;
We are bound by the cordage of materialistic laws
Which exalt these false standards and foster chaos,
Causing fleeting aspirations to worldly things, and
Oh! How we revel in the unfixed joy it brings.
And we follow this farce in our ignorant bliss,
Like mindless sheep to a shepherd, into an abyss.

Why do we waste our lives living this way?
Like slaves to a master, we bow and obey
The unreal parameters of our actualization;
We sow superficiality, and we reap our damnation.
We forget that real riches are not silver or gold
But the memories we create as we ever grow old.
Because the more we look, the less we find,
All the while losing clarity and peace of mind.

We would all do well to break cerebral confines,
Because the key to liberation is freeing our minds;
I oft think of the dreaded prophet as he calls out to me
To emancipate myself from mental slavery.
And free shall I be, From society’s grip!
No longer will I cower at the crack of its whip;
I will rise up and escape this self-laid oppression!
As I am freed forever from this intangible prison.
